Final Major Project - An exploration into the crossovers and clashes experienced in modern language

1 Team Down

I have produced one team today (chavs). Really happy they way they have turned out, haven't been able to move them yet so hopefully they will work, will find out tomorrow.

Laser Cutting Done

Went to pick my laser cutting up today. Its all coming together slowly but surely....

Screen Printing

Went to the Print Club today, had a successful day printing on to the front of the boxes....

The layout..

Just having a play with photoshop just to see what it could look like all laid out, I know there is only one colour but i think it will be three teams per box all players standing up, so the box will be full of different colours and icons. Went to see Mick at laser cutting yesterday and he said we would be able to laser high destiny foam or felt so that what will be in the bottom of the box to support the players. also the empty section at the bottom of the box with be space for the playing matt and ball and goals.....

Playing surface

I have made my own football pitch, its going to be screen printed on to nylon with a measurement of 1m by 1.4m......

Packaging

Been thing about the packaging, seen a portfolio box which is A2 size and 3 inches deep, the box opens the way a book would, making it appropriate for my modern day dictionary/thesaurus approach to the project. Would like the front of the box to be simple, just my six icons on the front. Going to see a screen printer tomorrow (bob eight pop) to see if he can print on the portfolio boxes. Here is a little tester to see what it could look like....

Laser Cutting Files Done

Just some images of what I have sent to the laser cutters. Should be picking them up on Thursday....

Received the Base

Received a clear base this morning so got to work and tried a sample player. Very happy with it so just ordered 120 bases for all my players.

Cut Laser Cut

Went to cut laser cut yesterday to get some testers done of one of my teams (wealthy) then today went to 4d model shop to collect a sample of what the bottoms of the players could be. Very simple model made with a hemisphere and laser cut men. this will not be the final product just a tester. Here are some pics.

Little Model

A really rough model just to see what they could look like!!

Names and Numbers

Just had a look at what the icons would look like with names and numbers on their backs, just using fat as an example.

The reasons why I have pushed forward with a game

I feel that subbuteo is the right context for my work to be displayed in. The words I have found are contemporary interpretations of traditional words therefore putting them in a thesaurus format would be inappropriate, putting them in a playful situation represents informal language in an informal way. This illustrates the irony between English words in a thesaurus and slang words in a game.

The way I could categorise the words and rating of the words is by having six teams so each icon is one team, also to show the popularity of the words I have collected is by having a larger number on the back of their shirts. The larger the number the more popular the word is.

Pushing my idea forward....

After someone commented on my laser cutting icons looking like subbuteo characters, i want to push my idea by making them into a subbuteo game. Making each icon a team with the names I have collected to go on their backs like a football top. Making the project informal and interactive.

Testing Laser Cutting

I had a session laser cutting yesterday in Chelsea, I made some tester pieces just so I could make some decisions on what looks best according to type and the size, also to see what they would look like seeing as I have never done this technique before.

The illustrator file used for the laser cutting:

Final Outcomes....

I have developed my icons and merged them with the words I found to form my informational laser cut panels, which will act as my interpretation of a modern thesaurus. This 'thesaurus' idea is what I intend to push forward as the key concept of my work as opposed to London language and graphical mapping. I made this decision because I found that as I continued to find new words and document their point of origin, there wasn't any clear indication that certain words come from certain areas, making the maps rather non descript. Therefore, I want to create a series of 'pages' to represent a 'modern thesaurus' which I intend to execute cleanly and graphicly through laser cutting.

Icons Finalised....

Wealthy Icons

I didn't like my first wealthy icon I designed (on the left) I have designed some more, not sure whether to use a pound sign or a dollar sign, but here are two more designs.

Booked a Session

Made a mock up of a drawing for Mick to see in laser cutting just to check my files would be ok to use on his system. He was happy with my drawing so I have booked a 2 hour session with him on Tuesday, in this session I will be doing as many tests of size, fonts and layouts as I can.

I had one problem while doing this drawing, if i want the font to be free standing I will have to free draw each and every letter. At this point just creating outlines and joining the letters together doesn't work, I'm still trying to solve the problem and will have a better idea by my session on Tuesday.

Laser Cutting Re-think

After going to Chelsea and speaking to the technician about laser cutting i'm rethinking what size my final piece should be, The price is a real issue at this point. I could get it done in Chelsea for 1/6th of the price. I'm going to see him again tomorrow to show him my designs, I will have a better idea of what size my final piece will be after tomorrow meeting.

Laser Cutting

Just been to http://www.hamaracrylic.co.uk/hamar_acrylic_fabrications.aspx to get a quote for 6 A1 perspex laser cut sheets with a turn around of 7 days costing £600. Think it could be a a good place to go, trying to see if I can meet with mike in Chelsea to do some tester, hopefully meeting him this afternoon.

From here on out!

Over the next week I will be fine tuning my six icons that represent my chosen words. I intend to translate the words and icons into a visual piece consisting of an A1 laser cut acrylic sheets for each word/icon, giving 6 pieces in total. The idea is to illustrate that one word/icon can be described via a multitude of other words and terms. This will be shown through the expansive repetition of the same icon in contrast to the variety of different words used to describe.

Over the next week I will be finalising my 6 icons to go with my 6 words (Homosexual, Wealthy, Chav, Good Looking, Ugly, Fat). I will also need to calculate the usage of the words in order to gauge what scale the icons should be as i want the scale of the icons to reflect the usage of the words, ie, the more a word is collectively used, the bigger the icon will be.

I hope to end with six pieces that will act as both a visual and verbal stimulus to engage with an audience, making people understand and realise the broadness of modern English language in London.

Laser cutting

I'm going to go to two places tomorrow to see what my turn around could be for my work also to see what quotes they give me.

More Icons

I have changed chav, tried to add a Burberry top. Going to see if i can get the shirt etched into the icon. also made a icon for good looking. trying to make them a simple as I can. At this point all the icons will be used in the same way i have been using the homosexual icon.

Heading Towards my Final Piece.

I'm starting to combine the words I have collected with the icons I have designed. I'm using the Homosexual as a formula for the rest of the words. I Think the final pieces could be laser cut, I will have to look into laser cutting to see what materials could be used and if this would be possible. I want to show that one icon could be described in so many words. The repetition of the same icon with different words beneath it to describe the icon, illustrates the broadness of the modern language.

The size of the icon represents how popular the words are.

A few new words to add!

I have taken the old Modern Dictionary that I have created already in an older post and updated it the new words I have come across.

Icon Models

Just had a quick go at making the some of the icons out of colour clay modelling material. I was thinking they could be laser cut out of different materials. I could make large models for the show, making the viewer interact with them. I think making large models and then having people write what they think they represent is just gathering more and more research and not bring the project to an ending, need to think of how I can integrate the icons with the words.

Icons

I want to branch away from just wording so I have come up with icons for each word, these are very quick and if going to go ahead with them will need tweaking. Thinks these could be good as big models. only come up with homosexual, fat and chav but others are on their way........

Quick Graphical Maps

Information graphics from where I gathered my words from. I wanted this to take me seconds but found out it was much harder to organise all the words I have gathered. I went to these areas of London so I could get as many words as I could from north, east, south and west London
