Final Major Project - An exploration into the crossovers and clashes experienced in modern language

This project will be an exploration into the crossovers and clashes experienced in modern language. Within London alone there are a variety of dialects and vernaculars, which fuel extensive differences in the translation of words. There can be tens of different and unique explanations for one word within the English dictionary and the choice of words used often depends on a persons geographical location and environment. This project will communicate this by finding hidden terms and words within the separate pockets of London.

Using six words which are regularly used to describe people, for example, wealthy, clever and gay, this project will investigate a wealth of other unique individual words in particular dialects used to describe these terms, resulting in a thesaurus of original words, full of character. Research will include verbal recording and mapping within London where strong dialects have been forms, such as Chelsea/Knightsbridge, Brixton, Old and New cockney, South and North London.

This project lends itself to unique forms of mapping and typography which will form other aspects of the piece.
